This is a beat I came up with a long time ago, when I was in high school. I’m sure I stole it from somewhere, and over the years I’ve heard variations of it. It uses the toms to create a complex polyrhythm alongside the straight groove of the bass drum and ride.
This next beat is a pattern from one of my band’s songs. It’s a tough one, with your right hand moving between the ride and hats. It also plays with moving the snare around the 2, and then resolving back on the 4. Its part of a larger fill out of a bridge, but its my favorite part.
